Its career in the conspiracy canon runs through the hidden-hand literature — the claim that crises are manufactured to justify consolidation is Robison’s 1797 argument in modern dress. Adam Curtis’ The Power of Nightmares (2004) is the documentary record’s closest mainstream rendering: governance by manufactured fear, argued from archive footage.
