The first guide reads: “Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.” The other nine speak of wisdom, justice, tempered reason, and “a world language” — the register of a mid-century world-order tract carved in granite. Whatever the sponsor intended, the first line is the only one the wider conversation ever quotes.
The monument was commissioned in 1979 by a man using the name “R.C. Christian” through Elberton Granite Finishing Company, which confirmed a paid contract while keeping his identity under seal. The stones included an astronomical calendar, a sun-dial and a north-star slot — real engineering in service of an anonymous message.
On July 6, 2022, a bomb damaged one wing; the county demolished the monument the same day, citing safety. No suspect was convicted, and the sponsor never surfaced. The codex notes the sequence dryly: erected by a stranger, erased in a morning, unexplained at both ends.
