THE HANDLER
Front: The puppet chain's middle link — the voices the public hears

The Directorate's director of voices: the codex's invented handler of the plan's public faces — the officials, the anchors, the beloved figures who speak with, the transmissions insist, another's voice. She is the puppet chain's middle link made flesh: between the seats and the screens, the one who briefs both.

Origin

In the codex's telling, an acting coach from a repertory theatre that no longer stands, who discovered that public life had become a stage without a stage manager — and appointed herself. She is said to remember every client by their tells and none by their names.

The Rise

Her rise is told in someone else's ascendancies: the spokesman who found his cadence, the minister who found his sorrow, the anchor who found his fury — each one, the codex's panels note, found shortly after being seen leaving her Green Room. The mythology calls it control. The annotators call it the oldest craft in public life, written down in 1928 — and file both.

Current Assignment

She holds Seat VII for the voices: the daily casting of the plan's public face. When the transmissions show the puppet chain — entities, ritual contracts, elites, institutions, public — Lauden's desk is the link between institutions and public: who says it, and in whose cadence.

The Ritual Contract

Her ritual contract is written in cue cards: a covenant that the voice arrives before the conviction, that the client never reads the last page, and that the handler is never photographed. The transmissions draw it as a mirror signed on the glass.

Known Sayings

“The puppet must believe the voice is his own.”
“I do not write the lines. I schedule the sincerity.”
“Every public figure is a duet. I am the note you do not hear.”

Weaknesses & Tells

Her tell: the identical pause — the beat of sincerity landing at the same moment on every network. Her weakness: her clients keep their own last pages — and the Shift, the mythology says, is the client reading his.

THE RECORD
The Handler embodies the canon's puppet claim — that public voices are managed from offstage. Its real shelf: Adam Curtis's The Century of the Self (2002) — the documented history of how Freud's psychology was absorbed into public relations and politics, filed in the Library with its argument intact and its limits noted. Lauden is invented; the craft she manages was documented on camera by the BBC.
