THE COUNTER-REVOLUTION'S HISTORIAN
1741–1820
A French Jesuit priest who fled the Revolution and answered it with five volumes: the Memoirs Illustrating the History of Jacobinism. The canon reads him as the man who traced the plan to its source. The record shows a counter-revolutionary historian working the same seized papers as Robison — independently, in another language, in the same years.
The Canon’s Reading
In the mythology, Barruel is the proof of depth: the priest who showed the plan ran philosophers → Masons → Illuminati, a conspiracy with a genealogy. The transmissions' 'it never stopped' panels — the claim that today's architecture descends in unbroken line from 1776 — are his three-stage argument in gold ink.
The Record
The five volumes — Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire du Jacobinisme, published 1797–98 — argued the Revolution was the work of three conspiracies in sequence: the philosophes against religion, the Freemasons against the altar and throne, and the Bavarian Illuminati against what remained. His evidence was the order's real seized correspondence.
The same archive as Robison — Barruel's first volumes and Robison's Proofs of a Conspiracy appeared almost simultaneously in 1797 — two men, two languages, one documentary record. Neither needed the other; both read the same Bavarian papers and sounded the same alarm.
The fork he did not take — Late in life Barruel received the forged 'Simonini letter' (1806) alleging a Jewish direction behind the conspiracy; he never published on it. The racialized turn came after him — the record separates his anti-philosophe history from the forgery-fed branch that followed.
The Afterlife
The Memoirs gave the genre its architecture: a hidden succession, three stages deep, documented by seized papers. Nesta Webster rebuilt her interwar standard on his frame, and the codex's hidden-hand chapters inherit the shape whether they cite him or not. The Grounded Edition files him as the genealogy's first historian — real papers, real order, and an argument the mythology has been re-signing for two hundred years.
