John Robison
THE FOUNDING WHISTLEBLOWER
1739–1805
Scottish physicist, professor of natural philosophy at Edinburgh — and the man whose 1797 exposé became the founding text of the entire hidden-hand genre. The canon reads him as the whistleblower who saw the machinery from inside. The record shows something both narrower and more remarkable: a working scientist who got hold of a real seized correspondence and understood what it proved.
The Canon’s Reading
In the mythology, Robison is the first name on the wall: the insider who exposed the Illuminati's infiltration of the lodges and warned every government in Europe. Every transmission's 'hidden hand' column descends from his book, whether it cites him or not — the idea that a real order was documented, in print, by a respectable professor, is the canon's proof that the canon is provable.
The Record
The order was real — The Bavarian Illuminati genuinely existed: founded May 1, 1776 by Adam Weishaupt in Ingolstadt, infiltrating Masonic lodges, suppressed by the Bavarian government in 1785. Robison's source material was the order's actual seized papers, published by the state.
The book — Proofs of a Conspiracy against all the Religions and Governments of Europe, carried on in the Secret Meetings of Free Masons, Illuminati and Reading Societies (1797). Its claims were organizational, not supernatural — a documented network, not a dark-power theology.
The man — A Fellow of the Royal Society, collaborator of James Watt, inventor of the siren. He wrote the book in his late fifties, as a work of alarm by a man of science — not as prophecy, and not as the foundation of a mythology.
The Afterlife
The book outlived its moment by two centuries and counting. It was quoted against the Jacobins in the 1790s, revived by Nesta Webster in the 1920s, photocopied through the samizdat decades, and quoted verbatim on the transmissions. The codex files it as the genre's founding artifact — and the Grounded Edition's first lesson: a real order, a real suppression, a real professor — and a mythology that needed only the angle, not the facts, to grow two hundred years of afterlife.
